FP7

The Seventh Framework Program is the European Union’s main instrument for research funding. It directs more than 54 billion Euros over 7 years (2007-2013) for research, technological development and demonstration activities. The remainder of the research is funded by public and private sources in the individual countries. FP7 is the natural successor to the 6th Framework Program, and is the result of years of consultation with the scientific community, research and policy making institutions, and other interested parties.

Since their launch in 1984, the Framework Programs have played a lead role in multidisciplinary research and cooperative activities in Europe and beyond. FP7 continues that task, and is both larger and more comprehensive than earlier Framework Programs. The FP7 budget represents a 63% increase from FP6 at current prices, which means additional resources for European research.

The Seventh Framework Program is based on four specific programs:

Cooperation– fostering collaboration between industry and academia to gain leadership in key technology areas.
Ideas – supporting basic research at the scientific frontiers (implemented by the European Research Council).
People– supporting mobility and career development for researchers both within and outside Europe.
Capacities – helping develop the capacities that Europe needs to be a thriving knowledge-based economy.

Of particular interest to ERA-Link members is the establishment of the European Research Council under the Ideas program, which will support investigator-driven frontier research; and the reinforcement of the Marie Curie actions for the training and career development of researchers, including the international dimension - with a specific mention of networks of European researchers abroad, under the People program.
